Dylan Warrington

Dylan Warrington

My name is Dylan Warrington and I am attending Washburn University for the first time this Fall 2016 semester. I chose Washburn due to location, because I live in Lawrence (born and raised), and cost. My major is Mass Media Film & Video, minoring in History. I am a transfer student from Johnson County Community College and Kansas City Kansas Community College where I received an Associate Degree (A.A.S.) in Audio Engineering in 2014.
I love music and I often write lyrics and come up with music in my head and I have recorded and mixed many of my own songs and am currently trying to finish up my first album, that is a “just for fun” album; titled “Discovering ME.” I don’t know how to play any instruments except fool around on a piano and my vocals aren’t that great if I’m honest. I took over a year off after my Associate Degree to figure out where I wanted to go from there. I originally believed that music was the way I wanted to go, still a passion, but I found or rather realized another passion that was more meaningful to me – film.
Literally overnight I decided I wanted to make a movie and get into the movie business. I have always enjoyed watching movies and television and often found myself analyzing what I was watching and wondering how it was done, what it would be like, what I would do differently. I started writing a screenplay and scripts and at the same time I opened a legitimate film business called DDUB Productions (LLC). I knew I was serious about this and wanted to be professional so I felt the only “right” thing to do would be to open my own business.
I released my film “VIVID” in three parts online and DVD in August/September 2015. I wrote the story, produced, directed, partly filmed it, edited, sound selection/creation, and lead actor in the film. Probably the best part of it is that even though the actors weren’t phenomenal (due to almost all of them never acting before), I had many people who were willing to support me and volunteer for my movie as well as businesses allowing me to film in locations for free and borrow materials! It’s certainly not the best I can do, just the best I could do for what I had at the time and what time I had to work with.
I currently market myself as an amateur (I don’t like that word, it sounds unprofessional) Writer, Producer, Director, Cinematographer, Editor, Sound Designer/Editor, and Actor; where I can “contract” myself out or work under my company name. Unfortunately I haven’t seen any (paid) business yet but I have been trying to work on personal projects of my own (music videos, public service announcement) and I’m constantly thinking up more ideas. Although not a paid project, I did collaborate with my good friend’s detailing business “Detailing Perfection,” where I created a 30 second online ad which consequently received over 1000 views in less than 48 hours (which was exciting for us); three more are on the way.
Where does the History fit in? Well, I’ve been in a struggle to figure out what I want to do with my life even scared of what I might have to do as far as moving away from my family and all that I know and love, to follow my dreams. So I looked at my other interests and teaching is something I always thought about doing albeit later in life, and couldn’t see myself teaching anything other than History. So I found Washburn, admitted in, set my major to History with Teaching emphasis. The thought being I get the degree, work a couple years, save money, live in Los Angeles over the summers and try my luck in the film/acting industry. Well, my dreams were yelling at me again and I realized I can’t put off my dreams any longer, thus here I am changed to Film major. I figure having a degree in the industry I’m trying to get into would severely help me get into the film industry.
My dream is to make movies, write, direct, and act in my own films (hopefully one day under my own company name).

  1. Mad props for following your dream. I had a business for a hot second (I am not a good business owner, personally), so I totally understand the drive behind that entrepreneurship. Glad to have you in class.
