Chase Coble

My name is Chase Coble,  I'm a Junior at Washburn majoring in mass media with an emphasis in contemporary journalism. I have always been very interested in the media, especially within the realm of sports, so I believe that a career in sports media would be very fulfilling for me. But in order to get there I need to sharpen my journalistic skills and better familiarize myself with new technological platforms. The Mass Media department here at Washburn is the right place for me to do both of those things. I'm looking forward to soaking up as much knowledge as I can from both the excellent staff and my fellow students.

Although I am a Junior, this is my first year here at Washburn. I am a junior college transfer from Hutchinson Community College. Before that I went to high school at Olpe High School in Olpe KS (just south of Emporia). More than likely you have never heard of it unless you follow high school sports, or maybe you've heard of The Chicken House (my family's restaurant). If you ever go through there you have to give it a shot. Pretty much everything is deep fried and therefore delicious. I love both my hometown and Hutch CC and have great friends in both places.

Golf is both the reason I went to juco and the reason I am here at WU. I was not heavily recruited out of high school, mostly due to lack of exposure at a 2A high school. Coach Young at Hutch CC was really the only coach to take a chance on me. I took advantage of my opportunity and was an NJCAA All American at Hutch, and I helped my team to two conference titles and top ten finishes at the national tournament both years. This got me some more attention from coaches, including Coach Stromgren here at Washburn, and now here I am.

Obviously golf is a big thing for me but I have many other hobbies. I love the outdoors. Hunting, fishing, trapping, all of it I love. My dad and I raise 100 head of cow-calf pairs back home and I have to miss the calving season while I'm here at school which kinda kills me, but I get back home when I can to help out. Im a farm kid/ golfer hybrid, which you wont find a ton of admittedly but that's just who I am. Interested in politics and obsessed with sports, especially football. I played basketball and football in high school as well and I loved both of them. I actually have a job at a radio station doing play by play for high school football and basketball so my Fridays are pretty busy, but I love doing it. so yeah that's about all you need to know about me.

Looking forward to the class,

Chase Coble

  1. Welcome to Washburn, Chase! I know absolutely nothing - seriously, nothing - about golf. However, it's fairly important in the business world, so maybe I'll learn a thing or two from you this semester. Happy to have you in my class!
